Cold Sores or Fever Blisters

Cold sores, also referred as fever blisters, are a group of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters often turns red due to swelling and soreness. Pain or tingling, called the prodrome, often precedes the blisters by 1-2 days. Cold sores are common. You can’t cure or prevent cold sores, you need to take steps to reduce their frequency and to limit the duration of an occurrence.

You can consider tooth as a three layered structure. Inner most portion, which is the center of the tooth is the presence of nerves. The surface of a tooth is made of enamel and dentin. The bulk of a tooth, both its root and inner aspects, is composed of a calcified tissue called dentin. Dentin is comparatively softer and the hard surface of the tooth is due to presence of enamel. Most of the visible surface portion of a tooth that is visible is covered by enamel. Tooth enamel is the hardest tissue found in the human body and is more than 95% in mineral composition. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the tooth.

Ultimate Oral Hygiene Guide

I never had any kind of problem with my teeth, but when I had the problem a few months back, it caused me enormous pain, stress and the treatment set me back by a few thousand dollars. I’m not sure why, but I would always shy away from even the thought of showing my teeth to someone, including dentist. I used to wonder if the dentist would comment about my bad breath, about my teeth etc and hence, never made it to the dentist’s clinic. Also, the mere thought of siting on the dental chair used to scare me with thoughts about cavities, root canal treatments, extraction etc. Now I wonder if I would have been a regular to the dentist, I would have saved myself from all the pain I had to go through. Hence, I started this blog to provide all the information, so, that I can spread the awareness and even if a single person gets convinced, I would consider my blog a success :-)

In a layman’s terms, a good oral hygiene means healthy gums, which don’t bleed, minimal bad breath and plague free teeth. A few things to consider to keep your teeth that way :

1. Brush your teeth at-least twice a day. Ideally, you should brush your teeth after every mean, however, this may not be feasible. So, brush at least twice a day to get rid of the food build up. Floss those hard to reach areas.

2. Mouthwash is also very useful in keeping your teeth gums and teeth free of any problems. You may want to check up with your dentist on which kind of mouthwash is best suitable for you, as there are several kinds of mouthwash present in the market.

3. Poor eating habits like a vegetable deficient diet can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Consume less sugar and eat a a balanced diet. You will decrease the risk of infection and reduce the risk of developing a cavity.

5. Use chewing gum or better still, chew sugar free gum. Xylitol, a common ingredient found in the gum can actually reduce the accumulation of bacteria leading to tooth decay and other mouth related diseases. Also, it can help take out the food sticking in those hard to reach areas.

5. Last, but not the least – Forget all those reasons to shy away from a dentist and pay your family dentist a visit, at-least twice a year. It will pay you in the longer run.
